iPhone Review: Zenonia ($5.99)

Zenonia is an overhead RPG with gameplay similar to the NES and SNES Zelda games. The whole game has somewhat of an 8bit look to it, which I love. It is similar to Zelda in the manner that you are looking down at the world, the fighting is in real time, and the story is told by talking to people through text. But it also has elements similar to an MMORPG where almost every creature you kill drops items, you level up, and when you level up you gain points to add to attributes and skills.

The game may be sort of expensive for an iPhone game ($5.99), but you’re getting much more bang for your buck that any iPhone game I’ve ever played. I’ve played at least 20 hours of the game, and it looks like I’ve barely scratched the surface. The game’s description claims there is over 40 hours of gameplay to be had, and I believe it.

All in all, this is probably the most fun RPG I’ve played in many years. It captures the best parts of any RPG I’ve ever played and puts it all into a game that is meant to be played on the go. Portably speaking, it works fantastically with autosaving and making it still fun to pick up and play in small portions (but it’s still fun to play for hours on end!).

I highly recommend playing this game non-stop until your battery dies, recharging it, and repeating several times. It’s well worth $5.99 and much more.

Tomorrow: Wordfu Peggle (I wrote up the Peggle review before releasing I said I’d be doing Wordfu. My mistake. Wordfu on Thursday)
